It is difficult to explain Second Life experience without having been in it. The 2D web cannot truly explain the experience of the sound and walk through one gets in the virtual world. But for those of you don’t have a fast enough pc or fast enough graphics card then Video’s about the experience will help you feel it better. Please see a few here from my choices.
“Roughly, there are two kinds of people that go and spend time in SL:
- Those who look through technology...and are stretching themselves out to touch the goal and they want to go where no man has gone before or at least be there first in their own little community.
- Those who want it NOW... and go for it. They download the stuff and go in and first time around spend hours having fun. But our perspective from the onset has been to see how this brave new world can help us in our real world. And what has it got that the web 2.0 cannot give you at this point in time.
Here are some of you that must go and get involved: -
- Libraries should graps this chance to jump in and play a stimulating role.
Information architecture, content management, distribution, searchability & maximum findability, that's what we should be focussing on.
- If you have a state of art information management systems, integrated, interconnected with all platforms and apps used within your organisation, why not choose to look a bit further and deliver it in multiple environments? If you have used the correct standards, this should not be too difficult.
- If you don't have these systems and this level of integration, I can imagine your efforts should focus on this as a priority.
- If you are trying to represent your real world products and services then you should also look at this and see if it can help you beyond what your 2D Web is doing for you.
